I find myself drawn more to the moon than to the sun. This series was inspired by the song “Fly Me to the Moon.” The title of the series was born from a misheard lyric: in the song, I heard “in other world” instead of “in other words.” I set out to paint a moonlit landscape that feels like that very “other world.”

“Other world” can also refer to the afterlife—the world beyond. Marcel Duchamp once said, “It is always others who die.” I am deeply fascinated by death; after all, no one has ever returned alive after dying, so we cannot know what truly lies beyond. For me, this series serves as a meditation on death.

I imagine the realm of death to be utterly quiet, with the moon—not the sun—illuminating the water’s surface. The moon waxes and wanes, dying many times and being reborn just as often. To me, the full moon is like a hole in the night sky. Full moon, new moon, and every phase in between—the moon itself is like the two sides of a coin, made of both reality and illusion. It is a symbol of recurrence, embodying both death and life.

私は太陽よりも月が気になる。
楽曲「FLY ME TO THE MOON」からのインスピレーション。
シリーズ・タイトルは、歌詞の中の“in other words( 言い換えるとね...)” を
“in other world( 別世界)” に聞き間違えていた事から。
まるで“別世界” のような月明かりの風景を描いた。

“other world” には来世、あの世という意味もある。
｢死ぬのはいつも他人ばかり｣とはマルセル・デュシャンの言葉。
私は死にとても興味がある。死んでから、生きて帰った者はいない。
だから、どうなっているのか分からない。
私にとってこの連作は死を思う機能を持っている。
死の世界は、それが当たり前のように静かで、太陽ではなく月が、水面を照らしているだろう。
月は満ち欠けを繰り返し何度も死に、何度も蘇る。
私は満月を見ると夜空に空いた穴だと思う。
満月、満ち欠け、新月。月はそれ自体がコインの裏表のようで、実像と虚像でできている。
繰り返しの象徴であり、それ自体が死で、生なのである。
