A passage that has long lingered in my mind:

“The flow of the river is ceaseless, yet the water is never the same.
Bubbles float in stagnant pools, bursting and forming, never lingering for long.
So too are people and their dwellings in this world…”

While creating a piece for a hotel in Kyoto, I found inspiration in the Kamo River.
Only recently did I realize that the concept behind this painting aligns with that very passage from The Hōjōki.
Since my solo exhibition last November, I’ve returned to this theme with renewed focus.

The river flows without pause.
Though the world around it—people, architecture, eras—changes, the river remains, flowing endlessly.
It is always there, and yet it is never the same.
Through constant motion, it embodies both change and continuity.
For me, this painting is a way of expressing time itself.

The repeated, delicate horizontal strokes become layers of accumulated time—an abstract embodiment of the river’s presence.
Up close, the surface shimmers like moving water.
From afar, the blue field might resemble the surface of a water-covered planet, as seen from space.
Some viewers say it feels as if they are looking up at the water’s surface from beneath the sea.

Water is a mirror.
Its appearance shifts with one’s state of mind, one’s physical condition.
It reflects not just the world but the self.

Impressionist painters captured the fleeting nature of outdoor light.
In contrast, I hope this painting transforms with the inner shifts of those who stand before it.

Here and there, hints of metallic pigment emerge and recede—like glimmers of light playing across the surface of flowing water.

ずっと頭の中にある一節。「ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず。よどみに浮ぶうたかたは、かつ消えかつ結びて、久しくとゞまりたるためしなし。世中にある人と栖と、又かくのごとし......」
京都のホテルのための作品を考えていた時、鴨川にインスピレーションを得て絵を描いた
そのコンセプトがこの一節と同じことに最近になって気付き、昨年11 月の個展から改めて力を入れ制作している

絶え間なく流れ続ける河。様々な時代を経て周りの物(人間や建物) が変わっても、河はそこに流れ続けている。そこにありながら常に流れる事で変化し、そこにあることは変わらない
この絵は時間を表現する一つの方法だと思っている
横に細い線状のタッチを繰り返していくのは時間の堆積、河の存在を絵にすること
近くで見ると流れ煌めく水面のようでもあるし、離れて見る青い画面は、宇宙から見た水の惑星の表面のよう
想像力が見え方のスケールを変化させていく
海の中から海面を見上げたように見える、という人もいた
水面は鏡。見る人の気持ち、体調によっても違って見えるのだろう

印象派は屋外の光によって移ろいゆく風景を捉えた
この絵は見る人の内面の移ろいによって変化する絵になればと思う
