Water -The Long Afternoon-

A long afternoon—
A time suspended in thought.
There are moments when you don’t know where to begin, and so you remain still.
But the river does not wait.
Unaffected by the shifts in your heart, it continues to ripple and glimmer in the sunlight, just as it always has.

A passage that has stayed with me over the years:

“The flow of the river is ceaseless, yet the water is never the same.
Bubbles form and vanish in the still pools—
never lingering for long.
So too are people and their dwellings in this world…”
(from Hōjōki)

While developing a painting for a hotel in Kyoto, I was inspired by the Kamo River.
Only recently did I realize that the concept behind my work echoes this very passage.
Since my solo exhibition last November, I have returned to this theme with renewed focus.

The river flows without pause.
Through the passing of ages, the people and buildings around it change—
and yet, the river continues on.
It transforms by constantly moving, but its presence remains unchanged.
For me, this painting is one way to express time.

The countless, fine horizontal strokes are layers of accumulated time—
a visual rendering of the river’s enduring presence.
Seen up close, the surface shimmers like flowing water.
From a distance, the blue expanse may resemble the surface of a water-covered planet, as if viewed from space.
Imagination alters the scale of what we see.
One viewer told me it felt like looking up at the water’s surface from beneath the sea.

The surface of water is a mirror.
Its appearance changes depending on the viewer’s emotions, their physical condition, their state of being.

The Impressionists captured landscapes transformed by shifting outdoor light.
In contrast, I hope this series transforms with the inner shifts of those who stand before it.

Metallic pinks, blues, silvers, and golds form the base of the painting.
These layers glimmer from beneath the blue surface, reflecting light like a sunlit river in motion.


長い午後。何かを思っている時間。何から始めればよいのか分からなくて動けずにいる時もある
あなたの気持ちの揺らぎには関係なく、川はいつものように水面を揺らし 光り瞬く


ずっと頭の中にある一節。「ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず。よどみに浮ぶうたかたは、かつ消えかつ結びて、久しくとゞまりたるためしなし。世中にある人と栖と、又かくのごとし......」
京都のホテルのための作品を考えていた時、鴨川にインスピレーションを得て絵を描いた
そのコンセプトがこの一節と同じことに最近になって気付き、昨年11 月の個展から改めて力を入れ制作している

絶え間なく流れ続ける河。様々な時代を経て周りの物(人間や建物) が変わっても、河はそこに流れ続けている。そこにありながら常に流れる事で変化し、そこにあることは変わらない
この絵は時間を表現する一つの方法だと思っている
横に細い線状のタッチを繰り返していくのは時間の堆積、河の存在を絵にすること
近くで見ると流れ煌めく水面のようでもあるし、離れて見る青い画面は、宇宙から見た水の惑星の表面のよう
想像力が見え方のスケールを変化させていく
海の中から海面を見上げたように見える、という人もいた
水面は鏡。見る人の気持ち、体調によっても違って見えるのだろう

印象派は屋外の光によって移ろいゆく風景を捉えた
このシリーズは見る人の内面の移ろいによって変化する絵になれば と思う
