Light Edge -flowing-

The flowing water lines painted by artists like Tawaraya Sōtatsu and Ogata Kōrin in the Edo period are always in my mind.
This work resembles a lacquered box or a crafted object—
a painting that expresses flowing water through surface relief.

Metallic blue is layered over vermilion, settling into the depressions to create a unique texture and hue.
Moonlight is pale and bluish.
The ultramarine blue on the right half might be waves lapping at your feet—or perhaps a shadow that has drawn close.

I’ve always been more drawn to the moon than the sun.
This piece was inspired by the song Fly Me to the Moon.
For years, I misheard the lyric “in other words” as “in other world.”
That simple mistake gave rise to an image—
a vision of moonlit waters that felt as though they belonged to another world.

The phrase “other world” also carries the meaning of the afterlife.
“It’s always the others who die,” said Marcel Duchamp, the forefather of contemporary art.
I’ve long been fascinated by death.
No one has ever returned from it—
which means we cannot know what lies beyond.

In that world of death, I imagine a quiet that feels natural.
The moon, not the sun, would cast its light upon the surface of the water.
The moon dies and is reborn again and again.
When I see a full moon, I feel as though I’m looking at a hole torn in the night sky.
Full moon, waxing, waning, new moon—
the moon is like a coin with two sides, formed of both presence and illusion.
It is a symbol of repetition, and in itself, both death and life.

This work has a depth of approximately 4 cm.


江戸時代の画家、俵屋宗達や尾形光琳の描いた流水線がいつも頭の中にある。本作は凹凸で流水を表した箱のような、工芸品のような絵画。
朱の上からのせたメタリックブルーが窪みに溜まり固有の色彩、質感を作っている。
月明かりは青白い。
右半分のウルトラマリン・ブルーは足元まで迫る波、あるいは目の前まで来た影だろうか。


太陽よりも月が気になる。
本作は 楽曲「FLY ME TO THE MOON」からのインスピレーション。
私は長い間、歌詞の“in other words( 言い換えるとね...)” を
“in other world( 別世界)” に聞き間違えていた。
この絵は月明かりが輝く水面を表している。
私が歌詞を間違ったことで出来たイメージ、まるで“別世界” のような月明かりの風景を描いた。

“other world” には来世、あの世という意味もある。
｢死ぬのはいつも他人ばかり｣とは現代美術の祖 マルセル・デュシャンの言葉。
私は死にとても興味がある。死んでから生きて帰った者はいない。
だから どうなっているのか分からない。
死の世界は、それが当たり前のように静かで、太陽ではなく月が、水面を照らしているだろう。
月は満ち欠けを繰り返し何度も死に、何度も蘇る。
私は満月を見ると夜空に空いた穴だと思う。
満月、満ち欠け、新月。月はそれ自体がコインの裏表のようで、実像と虚像でできている。
繰り返しの象徴であり、それ自体が死で、生なのである。
