Prelude (into the dream)

I often recall the feeling of waking from a dream—
as if slowly rising toward the surface from somewhere deep below.
Even after breaking through, your face still covered by a thin film of water,
you remain within the dream for a brief moment.
Then the dream begins to recede, and consciousness shifts toward the outer world.
It is both an exit and an entrance—
a boundary between two realms.

I imagine this threshold not as a membrane, but as a short tunnel,
a connecting passage—
like the coupling between train cars—
that briefly links the dream world and waking life.
The title “Prelude” suggests the beginning of a narrative that unfolds between these two worlds.

About the rainbow-like colors:
A rainbow has two ends.
Each end is both a beginning and an end,
just like the opening of a tunnel.
Intangible and elusive, rainbows and dreams share the same ephemeral quality.
In ancient belief, the rainbow was seen as a bridge between the earth and the heavens.
Perhaps we cross that bridge—leaving this world behind—to dream.

The arched relief that divides the painting vertically and mirrors itself is a symbolic boundary:
the water’s surface separating the world of dreams from the world outside.
Depending on the direction of light, the surface relief transforms the painting’s appearance,
shifting what we see as we shift our view.


夢から醒める時の感覚を思い出す。
潜っていたところから少しずつ水面に向かう。顔を出してもまだ水の膜で覆われていて、ほんの少しの間、まだ夢にいる。
夢が引きはじめ、意識が外の世界に移行していく。出口であると同時にこの世界への入り口でもある境界……。
それは薄い膜ではなくて、とても短いチューブで、夢の中とこの世界を繋ぎ留めている部分(時間)だと思う。電車の連結部のようなイメージだ。
タイトルの"プレリュード(前奏曲)"という言葉で、この世界と、夢の世界のストーリーの始まりを示唆した。

虹のような色彩について
虹には袂が二つある。両端は始まりであって終わりであり、チューブの出口と入口のようだ。実体がないことも夢と虹は似ている。
虹は、地上と天界をつなぐ橋だと考えられていた。
この世界から意識が移行して渡り、夢を見るのかもしれない。

画面を上下に分け反転するアーチ状の凹凸は、水面を境界とする夢の中と外だとも捉えられる。
凹凸は光の向きによって絵の見え方を変化させる。
